There is some Sage advice in this article. I had not considered telling my insurance company that I live aboard and now I’m worried what will happen to my premium if I do!
The costs that are quoted in this article, however, are widely out of sync with what I pay. Maybe it’s because I’m in California or maybe it’s because my boat is more expensive, but for my 46 ft 25-year-old sailboat with a diesel engine, I pay almost $1,800 a year for my Geico marine policy.
One thing not mentioned in the article is that you will need to specify how much Insurance you want for personal property, ie, all the stuff you have on the boat that’s not permanently attached to the boat. When you live aboard that can be a lot of stuff. I have $3,000 in Personal Property Insurance included in my Marine insurance. But I can’t imagine that that accounts for the difference between what I pay and what is quoted in the article.
